The American Motor Racing Association (AMRA) is a National Sanctioning Body based in Mt. Alto, West Virginia, which sanctions Open Wheel Modified auto racing in the US. AMRA race tracks are primarily dirt and range in size from 1/4 to 5/8 mile. With the relocation (due to work obligations) and subsequent resignation of long-time AMRA president Bill Hayes, 2006 will usher in a change in AMRA leadership. Longtime board member Larry Keefer now steps into the role of AMRA president.
In 1993, AMRA began with only three tracks running the division. Today the AMRA sanctions weekly racing, known as the National Series, in Ohio, West Virginia, Pennsylvania, and surrounding states. Each year AMRA sanctions hundreds of events at weekly sanctioned race tracks.
AMRA was founded with the intent that the sanctioning body should be responsible for enforcing car specification guidelines, not the race track promoter. Therefore AMRA has a staff of technical officials who work closely with and assist in the training of race track inspectors for every AMRA event.
AMRA had over two hundred fifty licensed drivers in 2005, and currently pays out over $32,000 in total year end point fund awards, and has awarded over a quarter million dollars in point fund money thru the years.
Additionally in recent seasons, a strengthened AMRA contingency program has awarded eligible licensed drivers with thousands of dollars in cash and product at the annual season ending banquet.
AMRA also promotes a traveling series called the AMRA Road Warrior Tour. This series was established in 1998 and consists of special events that offer increased prize money for each event. This series also has a separate points fund.
AMRA will begin its 16th year of operation with the kick off of the 2008 racing season. Past AMRA Open Wheel Modified National Champions include 2007 Champion Doug Henry, Kirk Isner, Bruce Dennis, Jerry Farmer, Kurt Hosfess, Kenny Johnson, two time Champion Mike Wilson, "Stormin" Norman Aronhalt, Brent Trimble and 2005 and 2006 Champion Andy Bond.
Past Road Warrior Tour Champions are Barry Jacobs, two time Champions John Burdette, Dave Groves and Kenny Johnson (Kenny is the first driver to win a championship in both the National and Road Warrior Tour Series), 2006 champion Mark Dickson, along with 2005 and 2007 champion Louie Krushansky.
