Schilling Memorial Run dubbed "Modified's Crown Jewell"
Slated for Inaugural run Friday, July 3
Boisterous $17,000-plus purse for the AMRA
By Scott Wolfe
STEWART, OHIO-Poised to be one of the "Crown Jewell's" of open-wheeled dirt modified racing, the Malta AMRA-sanctioned Greg Schilling Memorial race is set for its inaugural run at Skyline Speedway Friday, July 3. With an extravagant $17,000-plus purse and additional contingencies, this race is the cornerstone of the American Motor Racing Association.
With its lavish purse and $1699-to-win price tag, the Greg Schilling Memorial Race asserts the AMRA as America's "number one" sanctioning body of open-wheeled modifieds. Known as America's Most Competitive Open-wheeled Modified Series, the AMRA sanctions weekly racing series in three states, and plays hosts to one of the most prestigious touring series in its "Road Warrior Tour". The Malta AMRA Series is also known for its healthy point fund and contingencies program.
"We are honored to be the host sanctioning body for this event," said AMRA President Larry Keefer. "Greg Schilling meant a lot to us and to modified racing in general. Hosting the Greg Schilling Memorial is something very special to the AMRA. We didn't just want to have a 'big race', we wanted it to be something special...something spectacular. Some modified races may pay more, but none can match the purse on July 3. This is going to be the season's 'big race'."
Greg Schilling was one of the early young-guns in the Ohio Valley area when IMCA E-Mods migrated to the Ohio Valley from the Midwest. Greg was a hard-charger and won many races in the Ohio Valley area. Additionally, he later extended his fine talents to the AMRA circuit. Whenever the #99 was in the line-up, it was one car that fans could count on to be a front-runner. Not only was Greg a great racer, but he was a friend to many on the local racing scene. These friends, racers, and sponsors have all come together in a big way to honor Greg's legacy.
The purse for the event parallels a full-blown late model pay-off, featuring nearly $7500 for the first five positions, $799 for tenth, and $199 to start. The "99" at the end of each pay-off position is in honor of Schilling's number 99. Currently, former Malta AMRA Champion Doug Henry, Greg's brother-in-law, runs the number 99 in his friend's honor.
"This race is going to be huge," said AMRA advocate Dave Poske of Poske's Performance Parts. "The purse structure made possible by the friends of Greg Schilling and the contingency awards made possible by all of the industry supporters of the AMRA are fantastic. This is a race fans and drivers will want to experience."
"The work done by fellow AMRA racers Kenny Johnson, Mike McPherson, Jeremy Berwanger and others on behalf of this race, plus the work done by the AMRA staff and promoter Billy Jarrell's commitment are all deserving of the entire racing community's recognition and appreciation. Dave Poske's Performance Parts, Hoosier Tire Ohio Valley, Hoosier Racing Tire, Bilstein Shocks and Hypercoil Springs are all proud to be involved."
The Greg Schilling Memorial Fund has been established to help families in the Beverly/Waterford area, Schilling's hometown. In 2003, Greg Schilling was diagnosed with colon cancer. He passed away on November 25, 2008. A memorial fund has been started in memory of Greg. As this fund grows, the money will be put back into the community to help individuals or families who are in need of financial assistance. An award will also be given to a male and a female graduate from Fort Frye and Waterford High Schools in the form of a scholarship.
Also on the racing card July 3 at Skyline is a $1500-to-win, $175-to-start Steel Block Late Model "Stars and Stripes 30", Pure Stocks, Four Cylinders, and Mini-Wedges. There will be no sprints July 3.
The 1st annual Greg Schilling Memorial Open Wheel Modified race will be coming July 3rd at Skyline Speedway in Stewart, Ohio. Details and updates will be coming soon. Check the AMRA website at www.amramodified.com for updates. Below is the race purse plus contingencies to come!
